Torino, located in northern Italy, has a population of approximately 900,000. The political and intellectual centre of the Risorgimento movement, Torino served as the first capital of United Italy (1861–65). During World War II Torino sustained heavy damage from Allied air raids, but was rebuilt.

The city is the focus of Italy's automotive industry and is home to the headquarters and main production lines of the Fiat Company. It is also an international fashion centre and a center for aerospace industry.

The 2006 Olympic Winter Games hosted by Torino marked the second time Italy has hosted the Olympic Winter Games.

The Sister City relationship between Torino and Salt Lake City was created in 2003.
