Thurles is a market, post-town, and a parish 75 miles southwest of Dublin. The city's population is slightly more than 8,000. Thurles Town, originally called Durlas-O'Fogarty, is of great antiquity. In the 10th century it was the scene of a memorable battle between the Danes and the native Irish, in which the former suffered a great defeat.
Thurles Town is pleasantly situated on the banks of the river Suir, by which it is divided into two nearly equal parts, connected with each other by a low bridge and one spacious street, with smaller streets diverging from each extremity in various directions. The environs in every direction are pleasant, and are enlivened by beautiful, fertile scenery. The town is the commercial centre of a populous and highly cultivated district, and is rapidly increasing in wealth and importance. A considerable amount of trade is done in corn, which is sent by land carriage to Clonmel. The towne also supports an excellent retail trade, and contains a large brewery and a tannery.
The Sister City relationship between Thurles Town and Salt Lake City was created in 2000.
