Keelung has a rich and colorful history. It has been occupies by the Spanish, Dutch, Manchus, French and Japanese. The city has been under the jurisdiction of the Republic of China since 1945.
Aside from the port industries of fishing, ship building and military activities, it is also an international trade and business center.

Keelung has many beautiful parks and ancient temples, such as the 74 foot statue of the Goddess of Mercy, crowning a hill overlooking the harbor.

Since the sister city partnership between Salt Lake City and Keelung was established, the two cities have exchanged art and musical groups, as well as visiting delegations each year. In 1981, the police departments from both cities became affiliated as sister organizations forming very close bonds.
