Izhevsk is a large industrial, cultural and scientific center located in the European portion of western Russia, between the Volga River and the Ural Mountains. Izhevsk is the capital of the Udmurt Republic and was founded in 1760. The current population is approximately 650,000. The basis for economic development in Izhevsk is industry, with heavy concentration on machine building and metal-working.

Izhevsk is the site of one of the most famous arsenals in Russia, at which Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the world famous AK-47 assault rifle.

In addition to being an industrial center and major producer of steel, machine tools and motorcycles, it is also a capital of scientific, educational, and cultural venues. Izhevsk is also the birthplace of Salt Lake City JAZZ player, Andrie Kirilenko, whose nickname is AK-47 (because of his initials and his JAZZ number).

The goals for this relationship include educational, cultural, and medical exchanges. The Friendship City relationship between Izhevsk and Salt Lake City was created in 2004.
