Exchange students visiting Salt Lake City

This fall, delegations from Salt Lake City will visit Chernivsti for their city’s 600th anniversary. As part of their celebrations, the city has events and displays about Salt Lake City and the Sister City relationship we share.

Chernivtsi is a modern city of 295,000 residents. Chernivtsi holds a prominent position among other Ukrainian and Eastern European cities. The city's ancient beginnings and significant history add to its charm and attraction for those interested in the Bukovynian Region.

Chernivtsi is a city of students, with 18 institutions of higher education, 6 technical colleges and 5 vocational training schools, with more than 40,000 students. Chernivtsi is also regarded for its scientific reputation, with a number of research institutes including the Thermoelectricity Institute, the Institute of Applied Mechanics and Mathematic Problems, the Institute of Medical and Ecological Problems, and the World Economics and International Relations Institute.

CHERNIVTSI SISTER CITY CHRONOLOGY

A pattern of cooperation and sharing between people was established in 1989 when Salt Lake City’s Mayor Palmer Depulis and Lowell & Jane Turner established Chernivtsi, Ukraine as a Sister City to Salt Lake City. Many of the visits from Utah to Ukraine have included transporting substantial amounts of donated and purchased items, including medical supplies, medications. Vital humanitarian supplies and educational material. Seven delegations from Chernivtsi have visited Salt Lake City including three mayors from Chernivtsi. Twelve exchange visits from Utah have taken place over the past seventeen years.

The following are some of the highlights of exchanges between the citizens of our two cities.

1989 (June) Chernivtsi, Ukraine chosen as a Salt Lake City sister city. Visit to Chernivtsi by Mayor Palmer DePaulis.
1990 (July) Mayor Pavlo Kaspruk of Chernivtsi visited SLC. Mayor Kaspruk died.
1991 (May) Interim Mayor Georgiy Grodetsky visited SLC.
1991 (October) Rosemary Holt & Sue McCoy visited Chernivtsi to assess needs and direction for the sister city relationship.
1992 (February) LDS Humanitarian Services responded with a container shipment medical supplies after an emergency medical request from Mayor Victor Pavlyuk of Chernivtsi.
1993 (May) Seventeen SLC sister city representatives were invited by Mayor Victor Pavlyuk. Half of the professionals were health care professionals, led by Rosemary Holt, RN. Medical and dental supplies were taken. The group included: physicians, a dentist, a lawyer, a social worker, educators, musicians and an artist.
1993 (June) Dr. Anne Erickson, vice president of Salt Lake Community College and Dr. Michael Homer, dean of College of Business Salt Lake Community College established an educational partnership between the SL Community College and the State University of Chernivtsi.
1993 (September) Todd Baker, professor Adult Education at Salt Lake Community College spent three months as a visiting professor at the State University of Chernivtsi accompanied by a SLCC business education student.
1994 (October) Mayor Mykola Fedoruk, Dr. Vasiley Pishak, Rector of Bukovynian Medical Academy, Dr. Yuditsky and Mykola Luchak visited Salt Lake City.
1995 LDS Charities shipped a 40 foot container to Chernivtsi, primarily medical supplies and equipment.
1996 Educational exchange by Weber State University faculty members: Professor Judith Pratt and Dr. Karen Beaver. Rosemary Holt, RN accompanied the group.
1997 Mykola Luchak, Dean of International Students, Bukovynian Medical Academy studied at Weber State University for three months.
1997 Nadya Yarema, a sixth year medical student from Bukovynian Medical Academy is the first WSU/BMA medical/nursing exchange student. She obtained ADN and then BSN nursing degrees from WSU, and ultimately a medical degree in the U.S.
1997 (September) Weber State University exchange headed by WSU Nursing Department Head, Dr. Gerry Hansen; BSN coordinator, Karla Dalley; ADN Coordinator Dr. Karen Beaver; Professors Judith Pratt, RN and Bonnie Judkins, RN; and students Carma Miller, RN and Cathleen Robinson, RN to formally establish a student and faculty nurrsing exchange program between WSU and Bukovyninan Medical Academy.
1997 Georgia Lauritzen, Ph.D candidate, Utah State University, taught and consulted at Bukovynian Medical Academy for three months.
1998 (September) Transcultural Awareness Exchange and WSU representatives and faculty traveled to Chernivtsi at the request of Mayor Mykola Fedoruk and the Bukovynian Medical Academy to arrange and plan future nursing educational programs. Those in attendance: Dr. Gerry Hansen, Bonnie Judkins, RN, Carma Miller RN, Dr. Anne Erickson, Rosemary Holt, RN, Michael Arnow, and Clisto (Butch) Beaty, M.D., anesthesiologist, who sponsored 6th year Bukovynia Medical Academy medical student, Roma Plachinta study at Mountain View Hospital, Payson, Utah.
1999 (August-September) Carma Miller, RN, Brigham Young University, Health Care Systems Administration Masters student completed thesis research with Dr. Vasiley Pishak, Rector of Bukovynian Medical Academy.
1999 (September) Weber State University participated in the Ukrainian First International Nursing Congress in Chernivtsi convened by the Bukovynian Medical Academy. Dr. Gerry Hanson, keynote speaker, and Carma Miller, RN attended.
1999 (September) Transcultural Awareness Exchange presented a regional conference in Chernivtsi, co-sponsored by Mayor Mykola Fedoruk. Karen Shepherd, American Director of European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, London was the keynote speaker on the topic: Economic Development: Strengthening and Leading Ukrainian Communities in the New Century. Both American and Ukrainian professional presenters/facilitators participated in the conference. The USA attendees: Former Mayor Palmer DePaulis, Dr. Anne Erickson, Holly Sloan, Karen Shepherd and Rosemary Holt.
2000 Training conference in Chernivtsi on skill development based on the 1999 Conference with training in skills such as: communication, marketing, small business development and planning and human resource management. The consultants from Transcultural Awareness Exchange, Inc. were Holly Sloan, SLC/ Washington, DC and Mary O’Rafferty, Dublin, Ireland. The three-day conference was planned in conjunction with Mayor Mykola Fedoruk.
2002 Mayor Mykola Fedoruk sent a delegation of three to the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Attending were: Victor Sidlyar, Director General, Steel Machinery Plant and Ivan Rynshuk, Director, Communal Enterprise and Mykola Luchak, Interpreter.
2005 (October) Chernivtsi’s First International Business Conference was attended by the following from Salt Lake City, a SLC/Chernivtsi Sister City Exchange: Former Mayor Palmer DePaulis, Dr. Anne Erickson, Professor Carma Miller, Professor Karen Gunn, Bill Laney, Karen Wiley, Larry Wiley and Rosemary Holt.
2005 (October) Carma Miller, RN, MS and Rosemary Holt, RN. BS were named by Rector Vasyl Pishak to the Science Advisory Board of the Bukovynian State Medical University.
2006 (September-October) A University of Chernivtsi student exchange program was accomplished in the fall of 2006. Salt Lake Community College hosted eight students and one professor for six weeks in Salt Lake City. The Chernivtsi students were students of English studies in Ukraine both on an undergraduate and masters level.
2006 (November) Utah Valley State College Director of International Studies Grant Skabelund, Dr. Gary Measom and Professor Mina Wayman traveled to Chernivtsi and proposed a student nursing exchange with the Bucovinian State Medical University in cooperation with Rector Vasyl P. Pishak.
2006 (May) Pavlo Savka of Chernivtsi served an internship in the Salt Lake City mayor’s office and the Salt Lake County mayor’s office for a period of six weeks.
2007 (June) The State University of Chernivtsi has created an American Studies Center with Professor Mykola Luchak as the director. Former Mayor Palmer DePaulis, Dr. Ray Gunn, Dr. Tim Chambliss, Dr. Helen Cox, Dr. Anne Erickson and Rosemary Holt have been invited to serve on the Advisory Board of the American Studies Center in Chernivtsi, Ukraine
2007 (May-June) The first Utah Valley State College – Bukovynian State Medical University student exchange with was accomplished with 4 UVSC nursing students. Professors Mina Wayman and Carol Lavender escorted and instructed the student nurses in Chernivtsi.
